Gunmen abduct former deputy governor’s father while going to church in popular southeast state

Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State – Francis Igwe, father of former Ebonyi State Deputy Governor Dr. Kelechi Igwe, has been kidnapped in his Ndufu-Alike community.

Gunmen abducted the former deputy governor’s father was driving to church on Sunday morning, March 1, 2026.

As reported by Vanguard, the gunmen on a motorcycle intercepted Igbwe’s father’s vehicle, forced him out, and took him away to an undisclosed location.

The Chairman of Ikwo Local Government Area, Sunday Nwankwo, said local authorities are collaborating with security agencies to gather information and facilitate his rescue.

The State Police spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, said policemen are on the ground tracking the kidnappers.

Ukandu said the action is to ensure the safe recovery of the elderly man.

“Yes, we are aware of the kidnapping incident this morning. Our men have been deployed to the area to ensure he’s rescued unhurt.”

Gunmen kidnap Ebonyi governor’s aide

Recall that there was tension in Ebonyi state on Thursday, April 3, 2025, as gunmen abducted Mrs. Blessing Adagba, a top aide to Governor Francis Nwifuru.

According to reports, the kidnappers took Adagba from her community in the early hours of the day and whisked her to an unknown destination, demanding N30 million for her release.

The state police command spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the development in a statement and shared further details.

Gunmen kidnap Governor Makinde’s aide in Oyo

Meanwhile, Legit.ng also reported that a chieftain of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo state, Otunba Benedict Akika, popularly known as “Benee” at Olohundaaba, was kidnapped.

Akika was reportedly kidnapped at his Idi-Ape residence along Akobo Ojurin-Olohunda road, Ibadan, the state capital.

The kidnap incident was said to have occurred on Wednesday, September 5, in the Lagelu local government area of the state.
