A 14-year-old American teenager, Dean Roy, has declared his intention to run for governor in the US state of Vermont, saying dissatisfaction with current leadership motivated his decision.
Roy announced his ambition in a video shared on TikTok, where he acknowledged his age but argued that fresh perspectives are needed in governance.

Speaking in the video, Roy said:
“Yeah, I’m 14. I know it sounds crazy a 14 year old running for governor, but honestly, look at the people in charge right now. They’ve been doing this forever, and things still aren’t working,” he said.
Historic candidacy emerges in Vermont
Roy’s bid is attracting attention as he could become one of the youngest individuals ever to appear on a gubernatorial ballot in the United States.
According to reports, his eligibility stems from Vermont’s constitutional requirements, which do not specify a minimum age for candidates but require residency in the state.
Roy, who previously served as a legislative page at the Vermont State House, has already taken steps to formalise his candidacy.
New political party formed to secure ballot access
To qualify for the race, the teenager established his own political platform, the Freedom and Unity Party, through which he secured a place on the ballot.

“I just looked up what the age was to run for governor, I figured out there are none,” Roy said, explaining how he discovered the opportunity.

Despite the historic nature of his candidacy, Roy admitted he does not expect to win the election but hopes to spark wider involvement among young people.
“I don’t expect necessarily to win. What I do expect is to start the movement and to get more young people to come in behind me and say, ‘Yeah, we also want to make change,’” he stated.
