In a fresh political shift ahead of the 2027 elections, an aide to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has dumped the ruling party.

Godfrey Gaiya, who serves as Special Assistant on Political Matters (North West), left the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speaking on Thursday, April 2, Gaiya confirmed the move and announced his next political step, a bid for the Kaduna South Senatorial seat.
He said, “My decision to join the ADC was carefully considered,” explaining that he consulted widely with his supporters before making the switch.
According to him, many people are now looking for a better option that focuses on welfare, peace, and development.
Gaiya, a former Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, insisted his defection was not out of anger or personal issues. Instead, he said the ADC offers a new direction for Nigerians who are tired of “politics of exclusion and unfulfilled promises.”
He believes running for the Senate will give him a bigger platform to tackle economic and social challenges affecting people in Kaduna South.
Despite leaving the APC, Gaiya expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunities he had, adding that Nigeria’s democracy needs stronger institutions and more inclusive political spaces going forward.
