The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old woman, Maimunatu Idris, for allegedly attempting to murder her boyfriend by severing his genitals after reportedly discovering that he planned to marry another woman.

The incident occurred at Durbar Hotel in the Badawa area of Kano and was reported by the hotel’s management at about 12:50 p.m. on 27 July, according to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori.

Police said the Divisional Police Officer of Badawa Division led a team of detectives to the scene, where the suspect, a resident of Maigatari Local Government Area of Jigawa State, was arrested.

A sharp knife allegedly used in the attack was recovered as an exhibit.

The victim was immediately rushed to Abubakar Imam Urology Hospital for treatment, where he is currently receiving medical care. Police said investigations into the case are ongoing.

In a separate development, the command also arrested three suspects in connection with the alleged killing of a 30-year-old man, Abubakar Auwal, in the Sheka area of Kano.

This was contained in a statement signed by the command’s spokesman, CSP Haruna Kiyawa, and made available to journalists in Kano.

The police said the incident was reported at the Sheka Police Division at about 12:00 p.m. on 24 July. Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim was allegedly lured by Abubakar Ali, 40, Sulaiman Lawan, 27, and others over accusations that he was involved in an illicit relationship with Ali’s wife.

Operatives who responded to the scene found the victim unconscious after he was allegedly subjected to a severe assault. He was rushed to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano, where a medical doctor confirmed him dead.

Police arrested Abubakar Ali, Sulaiman Lawan and Hafsat Umar, 22, who was identified as the woman at the centre of the allegation.

The victim’s remains have been deposited in the hospital mortuary for an autopsy, while investigations continue. The command said the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Although the statement also referred to another separate case of attempted culpable homicide, details of that incident were not included in the release.

Reacting to the incidents, Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori condemned the acts of violence and warned residents against taking the law into their own hands.

He reaffirmed that the Nigeria Police Force remains the constitutionally empowered institution to investigate crimes, arrest suspects and prosecute offenders through due process.

Bakori assured the public that the command would conduct thorough, transparent and diligent investigations into all the cases and ensure that anyone found culpable is prosecuted in accordance with the law.

He also appealed to residents to continue providing timely and credible information to the police and to report suspicious activities through the nearest police station or the command’s emergency lines.
